A practical look at how location-based analysis can support decision-making in complex supply chains.

Our case study, “Map Nature Risks to Guide Supply Chain Action”, has been featured in the Business Action Bank by the WBCSD , a platform showcasing practical solutions to accelerate climate- and nature-related action across value chains.

Nature-related risks can be difficult to identify when looking at a sector or product in isolation. A supplier’s location, how a material is extracted, and the ecological context of a site can all change how a company understands its exposure. For organizations working with complex supply chains and incomplete information, knowing where to focus is an important part of managing these risks effectively.

The case study describes how Segura conducted a location-based assessment of our relationship with nature, aligned with the recommendations of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) and using the LEAP approach (Locate, Evaluate, Assess and Prepare), to examine priority supplier locations linked to aggregates and cement. The exercise helped us identify potential exposure across our supply chain, challenge some of our assumptions, and set priorities for procurement and risk management actions, even where information gaps remain.

The analysis identified 31 protected areas, 5 Key Biodiversity Areas, and at least 200 threatened species within the areas assessed, highlighting the importance of considering the natural context of the locations where materials are sourced. These findings help us identify information gaps and focus attention on the suppliers, materials, and locations where deeper assessment, stronger engagement, and improved traceability may be most relevant.

This work is part of our ongoing effort to turn our sustainability commitments into practice and progressively integrate nature and biodiversity considerations into our procurement and risk management processes.
